“VAT increase, dollar crisis, no stock” Citizens’ March demanding an end to manipulation and artificial crisis in daily commodities even during Ramadan on any pretext.
“VAT increase, dollar crisis, no stock” Demanding strict measures from the administration to stop manipulation and artificial crisis in the daily commodities market during Ramadan on any pretext, Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) Chittagong and Youth CAB Chittagong have organized a Citizens’ March from the traditional Ali Khan Majdi Square in Chawkbazar, Chittagong to the Jamal Khan Press Club.
CAB Central Committee Vice President SM Nazer Hossain expressed solidarity at the Citizens’ March held on Today.
The march, moderated by Youth CAB Chittagong City President Abu Hanif Noman, was addressed by CAB Metropolitan Organizing Secretary Jannatul Ferdous, CAB Sadarghat President Shahin Chowdhury, CAB Chittagong City Mithul Das Gupta, CAB Chawkbazar President Abdul Alim and General Secretary Ariful Islam, CAB Chandgaon Thana President Mohammad Jane Alam, Boalkhali UP Chairman Association Former President Nur Mohammad Chairman, CAB Pachlaish President Saima Haque and General Secretary MA Awal, Chattlar Kanth Editor Kamal Chakraborty, CAB Chawkbazar Anwar Hossain Roni, Mohammad Yakub, CAB Hathazari Laila Yasmin, CAB West Sixteen City Ward President ABM Humayun Kabir, social activist and CAB Metropolitan leader Sajjad Uddin, ADAB Chittagong Coordinator Mohammad Forkan, trainer Mohammad Mohin Uddin, Youth Nafis Nabi, Md. Sayed, Faiz, Md. Shahriar Alam Tausif, Russel Uddin, Imdadul Islam, Karimul Islam, Raihanul Islam, Sidratul Munataha, General Secretary of Youth CAB Chittagong University Mohammad Khairul Islam, members Saika Afsar and Mohammad Ariful Islam, among others.
The speakers complained that although the holy month of Ramadan is a month of restraint and salvation, a group of unscrupulous businessmen are hoarding, “VAT increase, dollar crisis, lack of stock” and creating an unbearable environment in the market of daily commodities during the month of Ramadan, but the silence of the administration and law enforcement agencies and the people of unscrupulous businessmen in the name of humanity towards them are creating an anarchic situation in the country. People are suffering and they are misleading the government by reporting that everything is fine without sending it to the government. Due to which, despite huge imports and stockpiling, soybean oil is not available even in the market, even with money. Although there is a law in the country to control unscrupulous traders, it is not implemented in reality.
In addition to building social and political resistance against black market and syndicates, the march called for holding weekly markets instead of monthly markets to show restraint in purchasing goods during the holy month of Ramadan, and distributing cash instead of distributing iftar items to maintain market supply and demand of daily necessities among the poor.
The speakers requested that if there is no price list in the shops in the market, if someone is making excessive profits or harassing, or if there is illegal stockpiling, they should report it to the Consumer Affairs Department’s hotline number 16121, or the cab number.
The speakers called on some of the country’s wealthy individuals, businessmen, industrialists, political and social institutions to do something to ensure that the common poor can eat Iftar and Sehri at affordable prices throughout the month of Ramadan, in addition to distributing Iftar items in the form of a competition. Although these arrangements are made for political or reputation-seeking purposes, the common people get one Iftar meal, but the public life is suffering due to the extreme increase in the prices of daily necessities including Iftar items during the entire month of Ramadan. Therefore, they called for avoiding such arrangements to assert their authority and doing something helpful in the life of the common people and if cash was given instead of Iftar items, the poor could buy and sell according to their own needs.
The speakers also said that although the businessmen give various excuses including VAT increase, price increase in the international market, dollar and LC crisis, it is difficult to find the truth in all of them. Due to the desperate need to earn more profit on all products, this huge mountain of profit has not only increased in the prices of soybean oil but also in the prices of all daily commodities. Due to this, excessive profit has now become a social infection. On this occasion, traders are creating instability in the market of every commodity, sometimes soybean, sometimes onion, sometimes pulses, flour and so on. The excessive profit of a few unscrupulous traders in the daily commodity price market and the delay of those concerned in their control are blurring all the achievements of the government.

বক্তারা অভিযোগ করে বলেন, পবিত্র মাহে রমজান সংযম ও নাজাতের মাস হলেও একশ্রেণীর অসাধু ব্যবসায়ীদেও মজুতদারি, “ভ্যাট বৃদ্ধি, ডলার সংকট, মজুদ নাইসহ” নানা অজুহাতে রমজান মাসে নিত্যপণ্যের বাজারে কারসাজি ও কৃত্রিম সংকট তৈরী কওে অসহনীয় পরিবেশ তৈরী করলেও প্রশাসন ও আইনপ্রয়োগকারী সংস্থার লোকজনের নিরবতা ও অসাধু ব্যবসায়ীদেও প্রতি মানবিকতার নামে দেশে নৈরাজ্যকর পরিস্থিতি সৃষ্ঠি হয়। মানুষ কষ্ঠে আছে এটা সরকারে কাছে না পাঠিয়ে সব কিছু ঠিক আছে বলে প্রতিবেদন দিয়ে সরকারকে বিভ্রান্ত করছে। যার কারণে বিপুল আমদানি ও মজুতের পরও সয়াবিন তৈল উদাও, বাজারে টাকা দিয়েও তেল পাওয়া যাচ্ছে না। অসাধু ব্যবসায়ীদের নিয়ন্ত্রণে দেশে আইন থাকলেও বাস্তবে তার প্রয়োগ নাই।
পদযাত্রায় কালোবাজরী ও সিন্ডিকেটের বিরুদ্ধে সামাজিক ও রাজনৈতিক প্রতিরোধ গড়ে তোলার পাশাপাশি পবিত্র রমজান মাসে পণ্য-দ্রব্য ক্রয়ে সংযমের পরিচয় প্রদানের জন্য মাসের বাজার একসাথে না করে সপ্তাহের বাজার করা, দরিদ্রদের মাঝে নিত্যপণ্যের বাজার যোগান ও সরবরাহ ঠিক রাখতে ইফতার সামগ্রী বিতরণের পরিবর্তে নগদ অর্থ বিতরণ করার আহবান জানানো হয়।
বক্তরা বাজারের দোকানগুলিতে মূল্য তালিকা না থাকলে, কেউ অতিমুনাফা করলে বা হয়রানি করলে, অবৈধভাবে মজুত করলে ভোক্তা অধিদপ্তরের হটলাইন নাম্বার ১৬১২১, বা ক্যাব এর নাম্বারে জানানোর অনুরোধ করা হয়্।
বক্তারা মাহে রমজান মাসে দেশের কিছু ধনাঢ্য ব্যক্তি, ব্যবসায়ী, শিল্পপতি, রাজনৈতিক ও সামাজিক প্রতিষ্ঠান প্রতিযোগিতা আকারে ইফতার সামগ্রী বিতরন করার পাশাপাশি পুরো রমজান মাস জুড়ে সাধারন দরিদ্র মানুষ যেন ইফতার ও সেহেরী স্বাশ্রয়ী মূল্যে খেতে পারেন তার জন্য কিছু করার আহবান জানান। রাজনৈতিক বা সুনাম খুড়ানোর জন্য এ সমস্ত আয়োজনে সাধারন মানুষের একবেলা ইফতার জুটলেও পুরো মাসে রমজানে ইফতার সামগ্রীসহ নিত্যপ্রয়োজনীয় ভোগ্য পণ্যের চরম উর্ধ্বগতিতে জনজীবন অতিষ্ঠ। তাই নিজের কর্তৃত্ব জাহির করার জন্য এ ধরনের ইফতার সামগ্রী বিতরনের আয়োজন পরিহার কওে সাধারন মানুষের জীবন যাত্রায় সহায়ক কিছু করার আহবান জানান এবং ইফতার সামগ্রীর পরিবর্তে নগদ অর্থ প্রদান করা হলে দরিদ্র মানুষ তার নিজের প্রয়োজন অনুযায়ী কেনা-কাটা করতে পারতেন।
বক্তারা আরও বলেন, ব্যবসায়ীরা ভ্যাট বৃদ্ধি, আর্ন্তজাতিক বাজারে মূল্যবৃদ্ধি, ডলার ও এলসির সংকটসহ নানা অজুহাত দেখালেও সবগুলির সাথে সত্যতা খুঁজে পাওয়া দুস্কর। সবগুলি পণ্যের অধিক মুনাফা আদায়ে মরিয়া হবার কারনে লাভের এই বিশাল পাহাড় শুধু সয়াবিন তেল নয় সবকটি নিত্যপণ্যের দামে এভাবে অতি মুনাফার কারনে বর্তমানে জীবন জীবিকা কঠিন বাস্তবতায়। সেকারনে অতিমুনাফার এখন সামাজিক সংক্রমন ঘটেছে। এসুযোগে ব্যবসায়ীরা একবার সয়াবিন, একবার পেয়াঁজ, একবার ডাল, আটা-ময়দা এভাবে প্রতিটি পণ্যের বাজারে অস্থিরতা তৈরী করছেন। গুটিকয়েক অসাধু ব্যবসায়ীদের নিত্যপণ্য মূল্যের বাজারে অতিমুনাফা ও তাদের নিয়ন্ত্রণে সংশ্লিষ্ঠদের কালক্ষেপনে সরকারের সব অর্জনকে ম্লান করে দিচ্ছে।
