International Mother Language Day marks the martyrdom of the valiant people of Bangladesh who sacrificed their lives to establish Bangla as the state language. Such a sacrifice for the sake of the mother language is a rare occurrence in the human history. To pay tribute to the martyrs and commemorate the significance of mother tongues, International School Dhaka (ISD) has recently organized an assembly in nine languages. The event, a testament to linguistic diversity, took place at the Gym of the ISD Campus.
The assembly is aligned with the core purpose of why UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) celebrates International Mother Language Day – to preserve and safeguard mother tongues and cultural heritages. Additionally, the year 2025 marks the Silver Jubilee of International Mother Language Day by UNESCO. The milestone underscores a quarter-century of dedicated efforts to preserve linguistic diversity and promote the use of the mother tongue.
ISD’s assembly, a tribute to martyrs and a celebration of diversity, commenced with the national anthems of different countries, including Bangladesh, New Zealand, Fiji, Uzbekistan, Japan, China, France, and Malaysia. Two students from Grade 10 and 12 then narrated the history of Ekushey February.
Teachers, along with students from Primary and Secondary years, provided a flower tribute to the Shaheed Minar in the school. During the flower tribute, a singing performance, ‘Amar Bhai Er Rokte Rangano,’ took place, and it was led by the teachers. Students from the Primary Years Program performed the Hello song in Spanish and Japanese, narrated a French poem called Correspondences, performed a Mandarin song named ‘Jasmine Flower,’ and danced to the song ‘What Makes You Beautiful.’
In addition, students from the Secondary Years Program performed a patriotic Bangla song called ‘Surjodoye Tumi’, danced to ‘Esho Boli Bangla Ke,’ performed on a musical drama called, Ora Amar Mukher Basha’, and recited Verse 35 of Gitanjali poetry by Rabindranath Tagore in Bangla, English, French, Spanish, Dutch, Hindi, Portuguese, Korean, Russian, and Sri-Lankan.
On this occasion, Steve Calland-Scoble, Director, International School Dhaka, commented, “The sacrifice of the valiant people to speak Bangla highlights the importance of mother tongue and cultural heritage. Linguistic diversity is increasingly threatened as more and more languages are disappearing, so we feel thrilled to commemorate such a historical day with nine languages and help preserve and safeguard mother tongues along with cultural heritages.”

বাংলাকে রাষ্ট্রভাষা হিসেবে প্রতিষ্ঠা করতে গিতে নিজেদের জীবন উৎসর্গ করেছেন এমন বীর শহিদদের স্মরণে প্রতিবছর আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবস উদযাপন করা হয়। মাতৃভাষার জন্য এমন আত্মত্যাগ মানুষের ইতিহাসে অত্যন্ত বিরল ঘটনা। ভাষা-শহিদদের প্রতি শ্রদ্ধা নিবেদন ও মাতৃভাষার গুরুত্ব স্মরণ করতে ইন্টারন্যাশনাল স্কুল ঢাকা (আইএসডি) সম্প্রতি ৯টি ভাষায় এক বিশেষ অধিবেশনের আয়োজন করে। ভাষা বৈচিত্র্যর প্রতীক এ আয়োজনটি আইএসডি ক্যাম্পাসের জিমনেশিয়ামে অনুষ্ঠিত হয়।
ইউনেস্কোর (ইউনাইটেড ন্যাশনস এডুকেশনাল, সায়েন্টিফিক অ্যান্ড কালচারাল অর্গানাইজেশন) আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবস উদযাপনের মূল লক্ষ্যের সাথে সংগতিপূর্ণ এ অধিবেশনে মাতৃভাষা ও সাংস্কৃতিক ঐতিহ্য সংরক্ষণ ও সুরক্ষার প্রতি গুরুত্ব দেয়া হয়। পাশাপাশি, ইউনেস্কো স্বীকৃত আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবসের রজতজয়ন্তীর মাধ্যমে এ বছর মাতৃভাষার প্রচার ও প্রসারের পাশাপাশি ভাষা বৈচিত্র্য সংরক্ষণে আমাদের সম্মিলিত প্রচেষ্টা ২৫ বছরের মাইলফলক অতিক্রম করল।
শহিদদের প্রতি শ্রদ্ধাজ্ঞাপন ও ভাষার বৈচিত্র্য উদযাপনে আইএসডি’র অধিবেশন অনুষ্ঠিত হয়। এ আয়োজনে বাংলাদেশ, নিউজিল্যান্ড, ফিজি, উজবেকিস্তান, জাপান, চীন, ফ্রান্স ও মালয়েশিয়ার মতো বিভিন্ন দেশের জাতীয় সঙ্গীত পরিবেশন করা হয়। এরপর গ্রেড ১০ ও ১২-এর দুজন শিক্ষার্থী একুশে ফেব্রুয়ারির ইতিহাস সবার সামনে তুলে ধরে।
প্রাইমারি ও সেকেন্ডারি ইয়ার্সের শিক্ষার্থীদের পাশাপাশি, শিক্ষকরাও স্কুলের শহিদ মিনারে পুষ্পস্তবক অর্পণ করেন। এ সময় শিক্ষকদের নেতৃত্বে ‘আমার ভাইয়ের রক্তে রাঙানো’ গানটি পরিবেশিত হয়। এরপর, প্রাইমারি ইয়ার্স প্রোগ্রামের শিক্ষার্থীরা স্প্যানিশ ও জাপানি ভাষায় ‘হ্যালো’ গানটি পরিবেশন করে, ফ্রেঞ্চ কবিতা ‘করেসপন্ডেন্সেস’ আবৃত্তি করে, মান্দারিন ভাষায় ‘জেসমিন ফ্লাওয়ার’ গান পরিবেশন করে এবং ‘হোয়াট মেইকস ইউ বিউটিফুল’ গানে নৃত্য পরিবেশন করে।
একইসাথে, সেকেন্ডারি ইয়ার্স প্রোগ্রামের শিক্ষার্থীরা দেশাত্ববোধক বাংলা গান ‘সুর্যোদয়ে তুমি’ পরিবেশন করে, ‘এসো বলি বাংলাকে’ গানে নৃত্য পরিবেশন করে, ‘ওরা আমার মুখের ভাষা’ নামে একটি মিউজিক্যাল ড্রামা উপস্থাপন করে এবং রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুরের গীতাঞ্জলির ৩৫ নাম্বার কবিতা বাংলা, ইংরেজি, ফ্রেঞ্চ, স্প্যানিশ, ডাচ, হিন্দি, পর্তুগিজ, কোরিয়ান, রুশ ও সিংহলি ভাষায় আবৃত্তি করে।
এ উপলক্ষে ইন্টারন্যাশনাল স্কুল ঢাকা’র ডিরেক্টর স্টিভ ক্যালান্ড-স্কোবল বলেন, “বাংলাভাষার জন্য বীর শহিদদের আত্মত্যাগ মাতৃভাষা ও সাংস্কৃতিক ঐতিহ্যের গুরুত্বকে তুলে ধরে। অনেক ভাষা ধীরে ধীরে হারিয়ে যাওয়ার কারণে ভাষাগত বৈচিত্র্য ক্রমাগত হুমকির মুখে পড়ছে। তাই, আমরা ৯টি ভাষায় ঐতিহাসিক এই দিবসটি উদযাপন করতে পেরে অত্যন্ত গর্বিত; একইসাথে, মাতৃভাষা ও সাংস্কৃতিক ঐতিহ্য সংরক্ষণে ভূমিকা রাখতে পেরে উচ্ছ্বসিত।”
