Dhaka 21 February 2025:

Khokon, who was seriously injured in the July Uprising, is being sent to Russia tomorrow, 21 February for advanced treatment. The University Clinic of Lomonosov Hospital in Moscow, Russia, has agreed to take on the challenge of reconstructing Khokon’s face.

Khokon Chandra Barman was shot in front of the Jatrabari police station in the capital during the August 5 movement. A large part of his face, including bones, was destroyed by the bullet. Khokon Chandra Barman’s upper lip, gums, nose, and palate are no longer there.

Since the nature of Khokon’s injuries is serious and the process of reconstructing his face is quite complicated, contacts have been made with various countries around the world, including Bangladesh, for his treatment. In view of the inability of those countries, after long efforts, a Russian hospital, which is skilled in this regard, has agreed to perform facial reconstruction treatment.

In this context, as per the decision of the Medical Board comprising of expert doctors, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare is sending Khokon Chandra Barman to that country on a Qatar Airways flight along with Russian-trained surgeon Dr. Md. Mahmudul Hasan.

He will initially be pre-evaluated at the said hospital and a model will be created using state-of-the-art technology to restore his face to its previous state through 3-D animation. The main surgery to reconstruct the face according to the model will begin on or around March 20.

As part of the Ministry of Health’s ongoing activities to treat those injured in the July Uprising, 38 people have already been sent to Singapore and Thailand for advanced treatment. 3 of the injured have returned to the country after treatment. In addition, as per the recommendations of the expert committee, the process of sending those injured who need advanced treatment abroad is underway.

Under the initiative of the Ministry of Health, more than 14,000 students and public injured in the July Movement have been provided completely free medical services in various hospitals in Bangladesh.

Foreign medical experts from six countries, including Thailand, China, the United Kingdom, France, the United States, and Singapore, provided medical care to more than a thousand injured people and evaluated the medical system. In some cases, they performed surgeries on those injured in the protests.
